A compelling vision increases focus and productivity. This is especially important when your team faces high distraction and anxiety times, like a global pandemic or massive layoffs in their industry.
Help your team focus by creating a clear vision for a shared purpose and direction.
Be Specific
As an engineering leader, it is vital to establish a clear vision for your team to motivate your people and provide an aspirational destination.
For example, the objective of my team at Pinterest last year was to improve the user experience within the Pinterest app to aid users in their shopping journey.
In 2022, as the engineering lead of the Shopping Experience Engineering org, I helped craft a vision statement for my team that supported the company’s goals: “Our vision is to help Pinners realize their inspiration through shopping.”
This vision statement is motivating and attainable and is specific enough to provide team members with a clear understanding of what they are working towards (destination).
Align with the Company Vision
When you create a vision statement, it is critical to define your team's role in your company’s vision.
For example, Pinterest's vision is “to turn dreamers into doers by becoming the world’s first inspiration to realization engine.”
The way the vision of my org is connected with the company vision is through the connection between realization and shopping. Shopping is how we help with our company’s overall vision of “inspiration to realization”.
As a leader, your job is to connect the dots and help your team see a clear path to success.
Keep the vision statement inspiring, ambitious, and achievable. Remember, with clarity comes focus.
